Hey oppoers... I've been on oppo and Jalopnik for more than half a year now, and I have to say, you guys have a darn good community here. I just wanted to throw that out there before I asked y'all for a favor.
Our old Subaru Forester (1999) just broke down after a coolant pipe leak caused the radiator to overheat and melt part of the engine while the temperature outside was fluctuating between 70 and 25 degrees (yay Texas!). There's a temporary fix in the works right now, but if it breaks down again, then we'll need to get a new car.
This is where the problem comes in. You see, I'll be getting the car in a few years as my driver, and I really don't want to be stuck with a boring Camry or the like. So, I'm looking for a relatively fun to drive, preferably manual small suv or large sedan under 35k. It can be used, but 3 years or younger.
For the SUV I was considering a Volvo XC60 and the sedan I was looking at the Hyundai Genesis sedan. Any recommendations? I'll try to repay the favor sometime :)

I REALLY like my 2011 Forester... it's an auto but it can be had in manual and it's pretty fun to drive, roomy, comfy, and is excellent in snow/ice/etc. Can't go wrong. And if you want more power, go for an XT

SUV - Kia Sorrento
Large Sedan - Kia Cadenza/Hyundai Azera. Alternatively Infiniti G37

If you're still fond of Subarus, I'd say an XV Crosstrek. Available with a 5 Speed, and gets decent gas mileage. It's been a blast to drive, and still retains a bit of the carness of the Impreza
I get close to 29 mpg out of mine with the CVT and flappy paddles, provided I don't drive like a jackass.

35 grand is a bunch of money to play with. The Genesis sedan is comfy but probably not high on the fun to drive.
Have you thought about a CPO BMW?

So you are buying in a few years right? If you were in the market today a CPO Genesis R spec would be great value, picking up a Hemi Charger for that kind of money would be easy as well. If you were determined to get 3-pedals in a full size sedan a CPO 535 would be a fun but tricky option. 3 years from now the Chevy SS will be available in the pre-owned market. In terms of small SUV Forester is a great pick for 35k. So is the Escape 2.0T and the new Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. If you wanted a sneaky hoon machine the BMW X1 can be had with a turbo 4 and RWD.

The Genesis and XC60 are good choices. Would you consider a new or CPO Forester?
How about a Mazda 5 or Transit Connect? Unfortunately they don't sell the Rondo here anymore, but you might be able to get one used.
If you want a Serbian car, the Fiat 500L is your choice.
And there is nothing wrong with the Camry. The 92-96 Camry/ES300 is the best car ever made :)

Oh yeah a real nice CPO 328 is right in that sweet spot if he needs bigger a CPO 535 can also be had with a bit of miles.

Sportages are cool but the all new Santa Fe Sport has all the go of the Sportage but with more show (space and luxury).

Used audi s4? Used range rover from Carmax (see doug demuro)? Used 5 series? Impreza hatchback? You could go crazy and get a used VW phaeton from Carmax. CLA, A3? I can keep going...

I was referring to the more recent Camrys with my comment... I actually haven't been in a Camry more than a decade old, so I'll have to take your word, but the 2010 Camry sucks imo.

I was going to say CX-5, but it looks like you can still only get a manual with the small engine. Might still be worth a test drive.

Look at globalmotorcars.com Lots of high end vehicles, but they have some nicer cars/SUVs around 35k as well. They're in Stafford.
